L IS FOR LOVE (2023)
When I was younger, about 25 years ago, we used to make an “L” with our fingers to call someone a loser. It was something we picked up from American movies, and it stayed. Young people are still doing it today.
At some point I started asking myself: Why is L for Loser? Wouldn’t it be much nicer if L stood for Love instead? With all the wars and conflicts around us, this simple question suddenly felt very meaningful.
L IS FOR LOVE was originally created for a billboard project in Munich in 2023. For this work I used an old GDR border patrol uniform. In the German context, the Cold War still brings up the question: Did the GDR lose or win? That uncertainty shows how fragile the idea of winning and losing really is.
In my view, the world doesn’t need more losers and winners. It needs more love. By shifting the gesture from ridicule to affection, I wanted to open a space where viewers can rethink these categories.
For me, L IS FOR LOVE is a simple answer to a complicated world and an invitation to imagine different priorities.
